Pico Perfecto! WayB Pico Review: Lightweight, Travel‑Friendly Car Seat for City Parents

WayB Pico lightweight travel car seat in Juniper Green

You're in the Big Apple, and you need a Taxi or Uber. What are you going to do? Your child has grown out of their infant car seat and are on to the convertible. If your child is in the terrific twos, you're in luck. Enter the Pico.

Key Takeaways

  1. We love the WayB Pico because it's light and easy for parents to navigate the city once their child has outgrown the infant car seat. It is forward facing, so it's important to know that it's only a viable choice once your child is 2 years old and meets the height and weight requirements.
  2. Note there has been a change in regulation as for maximum height and weight, so check the manufacturing date of your car seat.
  3. Installation of the WayB Pico is easy. Affix the top tether and LATCH, and pull tight so the seat doesn't move more than 1 inch in any direction. Follow the instructions carefully and watch WayB's helpful video.

Why We Love the Pico by WayB

We are crazy about this car seat because it solves a big problem for city parents. Importantly, the Pico car seat by Way-B is actually portable. Once you pass the "infant car seat phase" where car seats can snap onto your stroller, you'll realize  that the next stage is pretty difficult for parents who don't have cars. That's because car seats are heavy!

But the Pico weighs in at only 8 pounds (that's compared to the 30-some pounds of most seats that serve this age.). It's not the same, of course, as the steel reinforced, crumple zone tech heavy convertible models, but for many New Yorkers (especially you without a car) those can be unfeasible.

Whereas a real convertible would be the best, the Pico is a great second! The Pico is suitable for children over two years old and is simple to use. It attaches to the back seat of the car using a flexible LATCH system and the top tether. When you get to your destination, just fold it and put it in the backpack carry case accessory!

It's even FAA approved and small enough for the overhead compartment in the airplane. Made of super light aerospace-grade aluminum and breathable mesh, this seat is a real gamechanger for getting around the city (or getting out of dodge) with ease.

Installing Your Pico by WayB

Here's a video to help you install it. Not too bad!

Max Height & Weight

So we said the Pico is recommended for ages 2 and up - this is because in NYC children have to be rear facing up until age two. But age isn't the only criteria. Like with all car seats, there are height and weight recommendations.

To that end, you have to look to the manufacturing date of the seat you have. (There's been a regulation change). So, for seats manufactured on or after June 30, 2025, the suitable weight is 26.5 lbs-50lbs, and height is 30 inches to 45 inches.  For seats made before June 20, 2025, children must be between 22-50 lbs and between 30 inches and 45 inches. The date of manufacture is on the label on the bottom of the seat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the WayB Pico car seat worth the cost?

It depends on your lifestyle and where you live. For city families who will inevitably use taxis and Ubers in the city (especially those who don't have a car), the WayB is definitely worth it. If you only travel in your own car all the time, it may not be necessary.

Is the WayB Pico car seat safe?

Yes, the WayB Pico is safe. It meets all U.S. NHTSA and FMVSS213 standards for vehicles as well as requirements of the FAA when traveling by air. This being said, if you have your own car, we'll always recommend a convertible seat for young children, just because it allows your child to rear-face, which is safer than forward-facing.

However, practically speaking, it can be very difficult to travel with convertible car seats as they are heavy and don't attach to strollers like the infant car seats.

Can the WayB Pico car seat be rear-facing?

No, the WayB Pico car seat is only forward facing. This is why it's recommended for children two years old and older, as in New York (and many other places), children need to be rear-facing until two years.
