What Do You Mean By Car Seat Compatible?

First let’s get to some basic definitions. Car seat compatibility means that your chosen stroller and your chosen car seat can safely be attached together and used as a travel system. The car seat clicks into the stroller frame and clicks out when you need to install it in the car. 

It all makes travel more seamless and easy. 

Usually the two are attached by way of a “car seat adapter” — basically small plastic connectors that are designed to affix to both gear items. If the brand of the stroller and the brand of the car seat are the same, sometimes you don’t even need a car seat adapter to bridge the two. 

To Be Compatible, Do I Need To Get The Same Brand Car Seat And Stroller?

Many people incorrectly assume that you have to get the same brand of both items but that’s just not true. 

There can be a host of compatible car seats for a stroller, and, especially if you’re going to use two or more strollers during baby’s first year (a primary and a travel) it’s best to have a car seat that can be used for both. 

One brand may have the very best primary stroller for you to navigate your neighborhood, but for the best lightweight travel stroller, you might have fallen for a model from another brand altogether. 

That’s why paying attention to what works with what is important early on, so you can think of all of your choices (primary stroller, secondary stroller, car seat) together. If you don’t you risk not getting all the functionality you want out of your gear.  

For instance, if you love the Bugaboo Fox, but you purchased a Mesa Max car seat, you won’t be able to use them together as a travel system, as the two aren’t compatible. These are two great choices, but there might have been a better combo to give you more flexibility when you travel.

The good news is that if your fave primary and fave travel strollers both are compatible with the same car seat (which could be an altogether different brand), you’ve got a trio that will take you miles and miles seamlessly. 

How Will I Know If They’re Compatible?

Every company that sells strollers will provide a list of compatible car seats that can be used with the stroller, often through the use of “car seat adapters”. Alternatively, as we mentioned, if it’s the company’s own brand stroller and car seat, sometimes they design them so that adapters aren’t needed. 

Keep in mind, a brand will be most incentivized for you to buy their brand for both car seat and stroller. As a result their preferred combo will get a lot of website real estate, but it isn’t always the only option. 

Look for their available car seat adapters to see what other combos you can make — or call us if you’re confused! If an adapter works with “Maxi Cosi”, for instance, this means it works with not only Maxi Cosi car seats, but also those that follow their design. 

These should be clearly listed when you click on the details of the adapter. 

The models on the list you see are models that have been tested. There may be other models that technically work but are not tested, and if you choose such combo, it’s at your own risk. 

The goal is to have two things that can click together safely and securely, keeping baby at the safe and appropriate angle while you stroll. None of this has anything to do with car seat safety when the car seat is in a vehicle.

Here’s where things get interesting: Finding a trio that all work interchangeably. You want to make sure it’s all “official” by the above companies so that your car seat has been tested to work with everything. 

This being said, you might notice that many of the car seat models are outdated and there are newer models that are not listed. This is where things get trickly. If it’s cross brand combo, it’s not necessarily top of mind for a brand to see if their competition works with their products. 

As we said, best practice is to find the ones that (1) are still on the market and (2) work with all of your choices and (3) if you’re curious if it works and attaches safely, you can always try it in-store to see!
